LONDON - England captain John Terry declared there must be "collective responsibility" for failure to reach next summer's European Championships.
The 3-2 defeat by Croatia at Wembley brought England's qualification hopes to an end - and also left the future of manager Steve McClaren in doubt.
Chelsea defender Terry - currently sidelined by a knee problem - insists both coaching staff and players alike must shoulder the blame.
Terry said: "On behalf of all of the players, we are hugely disappointed with what's happened. To come back to 2-2, we were so close.
"We take collective responsibility.
"There are many things when you look back on the campaign. It's disappointing for ourselves, our families, the fans and everyone in England.
"It's going to be a huge loss without us there in the Euros. I'm just lost for words at the minute.
"I can't explain the way we are feeling in the dressing room."
Terry maintained McClaren had the backing of the squad, and that now was not time for knee-jerk reactions.
"There is full support for Steve McClaren," said the England captain.
"It's been great working with him. We have thoroughly enjoyed it really enjoyed it and we take collective responsibility.
"It's not just Steve, it's the players. We are the ones going out there performing and not getting the right results.
"It's not just up to Steve to take it all on his shoulders, as an England team we all take the big responsibility."
Terry added: "It's private what's been said and I do not really want to say too much more this evening, but will do when thing have calmed down a bit."
