SPL roundup: Celtic suffers stunning setback

Stephen McGinn

GLASGOW - Celtic missed the chance to capitalise fully on Rangers' inactivity this weekend as they were held 1-1 by St Mirren in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

With Gers' clash against Gretna postponed to allow Walter Smith's men to prepare for their midweek Champions League showdown with Lyon, the Hoops could have gone four points clear at the top with a win.

They dominated a scrappy first half but could not break the deadlock, and Jiri Jarosik hit the woodwork with a header shortly after the interval.

But Stephen McGinn then stunned Parkhead in the 74th minute when he finished from close range to put the Buddies - who started the day second bottom - in front with the first home league goal conceded by Celtic this season.

To the relief of the home fans Derek Riordan tapped home from substitute Evander Sno's pass with five minutes left to salvage a point.

Inverness beat high-flying Hibernian 2-0 at a freezing Caledonian Stadium.

Marius Niculae (42) opened the scoring for the home side when he broke through and lobbed Yves Ma-Kalambay from 20 yards.

The Romanian made it two in the 77th minute with a smart finish from the edge of the box.

Hibs' defeat allowed Motherwell to climb to third after an impressive 2-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

Andrew Driver (12) found the bottom corner with a drive from the edge of the area to put the Jambos ahead but Chris Porter (52) headed Mark McGhee's side level.

Marius Zaliukas (67) turned into his own net to put Motherwell ahead for the first time and they held on for a fine victory.

Aberdeen came from behind to beat lowly Kilmarnock 2-1 at Pittodrie.

The Dons dominated the opening stages but David Fernandez's 27th-minute header handed Killie a shock lead.

Barry Nicholson's 61st-minute spot-kick after Ryan O'Leary's foul on Lee Miller levelled the match, and Miller's header (75) put the home side ahead.

Falkirk belied their league position to thrash Dundee United 3-0.

Pedro Moutinho gave the Bairns the lead when he clipped home from his side's first attack after five minutes, and they made it two when Graham Barrett tapped in from Michael Higdon's cross five minutes before the break.

The pair swapped roles for Higdon (66) to head a third.
