Shootout sinks Chivas in Open Cup

who was named to the MLS All-Star First XI earlier in the day -- and Mexico World Cup veteran Suarez.

Jonathan Bornstein, who has played all but one minute of the regular season, played at left midfield as Francisco Mendoza moved to the center of the midfield alongside Sacha Kljestan.

Chivas had a majority of the possession during the first half but had few quality looks on goal. Most of the club's scoring chances came on set pieces until Carlos Llamosa's shot on goal in the 25th minute.

Right back Esteban Arias missed an open header in the sixth minute off a Razov cross. Arias was booked in the 15th minute when he tackled Roma FC's Schell after Schell danced around Arias outside the penalty area.

Chivas had another scoring chance in the 25th minute but Llamosa's point-blank header went into a group of defenders.

Brent Whitfield had one of the Chivas' best scoring chances in the 34th minute. Whitfield drifted away from a Roma FC defender and had an open shot as Razov placed a cross from the opposite side of the penalty area but Whitfield could only hit the ball on the outside of the net.

In the 42nd minute, Bornstein finally tested Llamas with a low 20-yard shot.

Chivas held the majority of the possession to start the second half. In the 52nd minute, Razov sliced into the penalty area but Llamas came off his line and cut down Razov's angle.

In the 57th minute, Razov was sent off after receiving a straight red card for a foul on Roma FC defender Todd Paulette.

Four minutes later, Bradley elected to bring on regulars Palencia, Jason Hernandez and Tim Regan for Whitfield, Llamosa and Arias. Marsch came on for Matt Taylor 11 minutes later.

Mendoza had Chivas' best scoring chance of the night in the 75th minute. On a Chivas counterattack, Mendoza ended up with the ball in at the top of the penalty area and hit a swerving ball on goal. The ball was whizzed past the right post, however.

Roma FC had two scoring chances in the 78th minute but could not put the ball into the back of the net. First, Rowland broke in alone on Guzan but the second-year keeper came well off his line and stopped the shot. The rebound bounced out to Schell who sent a rocket on goal. Guzan got his fingertips on the ball and it rattled off the crossbar.

In extra time, Chivas still had the majority of possession but still could not find the back of the net. Bornstein had Chivas' best chance in the first 15 minutes when he had an open header from six yards out but sent the ball over the crossbar instead.

Kljestan knocked a shot off the crossbar after Orlando Perez sent in a perfect cross from the left flank.

As the extra time session drew on, Roma FC players fell to the ground in apparent fatigue. Roma FC also seemed content with a scoreless draw as all 11 players were on their own side of the field throughout the 30-minute session.
