RSL tops FAU in Florida camp finale

SUNRISE, FL - Real Salt Lake ended its 10-day training camp in south Florida this morning with a 2-1 victory over Florida Atlantic University in a 60-minute scrimmage played at the Holiday Inn Sports Complex in Sunrise, Fla. Forwards Kyle Brown and Indra Sahdan Daud scored the goals for RSL in a game that gave the Utah squad's coaching staff one last look at the team's younger players and trialists before breaking the Sunshine State camp, which RSL ended with a 2-1-1 mark in exhibition play.

Brown got things off to a lightning fast start just 55 seconds in, when he ran onto DF Tony Beltran's well-weighted ball over the defense that drew out the FAU goalkeeper, who Brown easily side-stepped before finishing into the empty net to give RSL a quick 1-0 lead. Brown appeared to double the advantage just minutes later on a similar play, only to be ruled a half step offside on the opportunity. Trialist MF Salim Bullen almost scored his first goal of the camp on a header in the 43rd minute, but he pushed his clean chance off a corner kick from 13 yards out just wide of the right post.

After going full tilt last night in an exhibition match against the Colorado Rapids, Real Salt Lake would cut the second stanza to 15 minutes to get one last look at players, and it was Indra who would take advantage of the extra time in the 50th minute. After a long build-up, FW Robbie Findley slipped Indra behind the Owls backline, and the Singaporean international did the rest, taking a settling touch before rifling a shot from 16 yards inside the far left post to push the RSL lead to 2-0. Florida Atlantic would get one back just two minutes later when an Owls attacker ran onto a well-played back-heeled pass at the top of the area and sent a hard, low blast to the left of a diving Kyle Reynish, cutting the RSL advantage to 2-1. The sides would trade chances three minutes from time, but neither would end up on frame, and time would expire to send RSL back to the Wasatch Front on a winning note.
