Rodriguez to participate in opener coin toss

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that Christopher Rodriguez will be part of the official coin toss at the Earthquakes home opener against Cuauhtémoc Blanco and the Chicago Fire on Saturday, April 12 at McAfee Coliseum. The home opener kicks off at 1:30 p.m. PT.

Rodriguez is a 10-year old boy who is currently paralyzed from the waist down after being hit by a stray bullet while attending a piano lesson on Jan. 10, 2008 in Oakland. Rodriguez played soccer while growing up and has been an Earthquakes fan his entire life.

"In a day where sports figures are considered heroes we have actually found a true hero in Chris Rodriguez," stated David Alioto, Executive Vice President of the San Jose Earthquakes. "Chris has inspired us all and will always be an honorary member of the San Jose Earthquakes."

Rodriguez will attend a pre-game party before the game. He will then join the team on the field and be part of the official coin toss. The Oakland native will receive an autographed soccer ball and an official team jersey.

"We are very thankful and appreciative with the Earthquakes organization for inviting Chris to be part of the home opener," stated Richard Rodriguez, father of Christopher Rodriguez. "Chris is very excited to come to the game and be part of the Earthquakes history. He is a big soccer fan and this will help in the healing process."
