Robert eager to impress in Toronto

Laurent Robert has played at the highest level of soccer in Europe, but he is determined to make an impact with Toronto FC. "I come here to prove to everyone that I can still play, and to win something," he told the media after training on Thursday.

"It is a good club and with my experience I want to help the club and help the players here. I know the game will grow here and that is another reason I wanted to come," he said.

Robert signed for TFC on Wednesday after being released from his contract by EPL side Derby County. His final appearance for Derby was as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United last month.

A big factor in Robert's decision to move to Toronto was the chance to work with TFC head coach John Carver again. Carver was coach at Newcastle United in the English Premier League when Robert played there. The winger was at St. James' Park from 2001-2006 and made 181 appearances in all competitions, including the Champions League, scoring 32 goals.

"I know John and Paul Winsper (Strength and Conditioning coach) very well," he said. "I was with them in Newcastle with Mr. Robson as manager and they were good times with a good team and we played some big European games. I like working with John and I know what he is like."

Moving to Canada will be completely a new experience for Robert. "I have never been here before, but I like the place and it is a nice city. My family will move out here in the next two or three months and we will have a good time here. I want to enjoy my time here and enjoy my football."

He is well aware of the Toronto F.C. fans and is looking forward to playing in front of them. "I have seen a video of them. I love to play for good fans and they give very good support to the team."

Coach Carver believes Robert's qualities can be a big asset to the team. "He's got pace, his ability on free kicks is top class, and he's a great finisher," said Carver. "His left foot is like a hammer. If he produces anything near as much as I saw at Newcastle, then we have a very good player."

Bringing Robert to Toronto was something Carver had in mind as soon as he knew he would be taking the job as head coach. "When I got offered the job here, I called Laurent to see if he would be interested. He then joined Derby before I came to Toronto, but we kept in touch and I'm really pleased it has worked out now."

"I'm delighted, especially for the fans. They've been patient, but there is more to come," said Carver.

Robert started his career in France with Montpellier and then Paris Saint-Germain, before making a big money move to Newcastle. The EPL team paid around $20 million to sign the winger. Since leaving Newcastle he has played in the EPL with Portsmouth and signed for Benfica in Portugal and Levante in Spain.

The 32 year old has represented France nine times, first in August 1999 against Northern Ireland. He scored one international goal, against Turkey in November 2000.

He will be available for selection for TFC's game at D.C. United, Saturday, kick off 7.30pm.
