VILLARREAL - Villarreal have confirmed out-of-favour midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme is close to completing his protracted move to Boca Juniors.
Riquelme has made his desire to return to his native Argentina clear in recent months and the coach of the Spanish Primera Liga side, Manuel Pellegrini, has not had the player in his starting line-up.
"Having reached an initial agreement between Villarreal and Riquelme, Villarreal executives will travel today to Argentina to negotiate the transfer of the Argentinian midfielder to Boca," a club statement said on the Villarreal website.
Riquelme was Villarreal's star player when the club reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2006 and is still a lynchpin in Argentina's national side.
