Revs sign Twellman to extension

New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman is in it for the long haul after signing a contract extension with the club Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 2005 Honda MLS MVP, Twellman has scored 75 goals since his MLS debut in 2002, more than any other player in that period. With a long term deal in the hand, it appears to be inevitable that the 26-year-old Twellman will challenge the MLS all-time goals record held by Jason Kreis. The mark is currently 108, though Kreis and Jaime Moreno, who has 105 goals, are both still active.

"The club is extremely pleased to announce that Taylor has extended his time playing for the Revolution," head coach Steve Nicol said. "He has been our leading scorer since joining the team and we look forward to him being our - and the league's - top scorer this coming season."

Twellman has won the league's scoring title twice in his five seasons. The first award came in 2002 based on total points (goals and assists combined), while the second came in 2005 and was based solely on goals scored.

The St. Louis native is ranked in the top 10 in MLS history in several statistical categories, including goals (75, eighth); goals per game (0.58, fourth); game-winning goals (21, sixth); multiple-goal games (12, seventh); and hat tricks (3, fifth).

Twellman is also the Revolution's all-time leading scorer and the club record holder for goals, shots, shots on goal, game-winning goals, multiple goal games and hat tricks.

He has scored five goals in 19 appearances with the U.S. national team.
