Reserves: United 6, Revolution 0

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Matt Nickell's two goals and two assists paced the D.C. United reserves to an easy 6-0 victory over the visiting New England Revolution reserves on Sunday morning. Lucio Filomeno chipped in two goals, Domenic Mediate a goal and two assists and Rod Dyachenko three assists in the overwhelming win at the D.C. United Training Complex. United improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while New England falls to 0-3-2.

Though neither team created a chance in the early going, United got on the board in the 14th minute when some quick touches from Mediate and Jeff Carroll sprung Filomeno in the goal box. The veteran striker collected the pass, side-stepped around Revolution goalkeeper Doug Warren and easily slid the ball into the now-vacant net, putting D.C. on top to stay.

In the 36th minute, it was Mediate again who provide the final service. After a clever flick from Dyachenko, Mediate sent his first touch from just outside the goal box in the deep right corner of the field across the mouth of the goal and directly into the path of Nickell. Nickell, running at full speed, struck the ball with the outside of his right foot and past Warren for his first goal of the reserve's campaign.

United would get one more before halftime when Devon McTavish sent a corner kick well over every New England defender to the far post. Nickell positioned himself perfectly and headed the ball back across the mouth of the goal where Mediate was waiting for an un-challenged header inside the six-yard box.

New England's best chance of the game came in the 59th minute when a free kick was sent deep into United's goal box. Defender Pat Haggerty got his head to the ball, but put it wide of the goal post.

United increased their lead in the 62nd minute when Nickell carried the ball to the left endline and fed a ball through the six-yard box to Filomeno who had an easy finish for his second goal of the day.

Dyachenko picked up two clever assists in the waning minutes, when he first fed a lofted ball into the goal box for guest-player Idris Ugriovhe, who took a nice first touch into the box and beat Warren. In the 85th, Dyachenko slid a through ball to Nickell who struck a beautiful, lofted ball over Warren and into the far left side of the goal. His strike would prove to be the final tally of the evening.

The reserves are next in action on July 9, when the team travels to Columbus to face the Crew. Following two additional road games on July 23 versus the Chicago Fire and August 6 versus Real Salt Lake, the team will return home on August 20 for a match versus the Colorado Rapids.
