The Columbus Crew Reserve Squad tied the Colorado Rapids Reserves, 2-2, Sunday night at Crew Stadium. The tie brings the Crew's Reserve Division record to 3-3-2 (11 pts.) in the MLS Reserve Division this season, while the Colorado Rapids are now 4-0-3 (15 pts.) in MLS Reserve Division play.
Columbus earned both its scores in the first half, each off the foot of Jason Garey. Garey's first tally came off a nifty Ricardo Virtuoso assist in the 38th minute, while Garey knocked home the rebound from a Virtuoso shot in the last moments of the first half to put the Crew up 2-0 at halftime.
While the first half belonged to the Crew, the Rapids responded with two scores of their own in the second half. Jose Cancela was the beneficiary of a fortunate bounce in the 68h minute, as a crowd of players contested a free ball at the top of the Crew penalty box. Cancela found the ball at his feet in space and he struck the ball into the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1. Colorado drew even with the Crew in the 83rd minute. Kosuke Kimura navigated through the midfield and found Nico Colaluca with a lead pass through the defense and Colaluca slipped the ball into the goal to draw even with the Crew, 2-2.
Neither team was able to break the tie in the few remaining minutes of the match and had to settle for the 2-2 draw and one point in the Reserve Division standings.
The Crew Reserve squad will not see action again until September 16, when it faces the Kansas City Wizards on the road, while the Rapids Reserves will play the Galaxy on September 9 in Los Angeles.
