Red Bulls out to spoil grand party

Yallop had a loss and a draw in his first two games in charge -- while the Red Bulls had drawn two games in a row.

  • All the goals came in a four-minute span midway through the first half. The Galaxy struck in the 25th minute when Herculez Gomez finished off a flowing counter attack with a powerful drive from just inside the area.

  • But the Red Bulls responded in the 27th minute. Youri Djorkaeff sent an exquisite floated ball from the center circle to Edson Buddle behind the right of the Galaxy defense, and Buddle scored for the first time since opening day with a low angled drive.

  • Then just 69 minutes later came the eventual game-winner. Jean Philippe Peguero and Seth Stammler played a pair of neat one-twos in the right corner of the area before the Haitian stabbed a low ball underneath Galaxy 'keeper Kevin Hartman.

  • Red Bulls head coach Mo Johnston didn't make any changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Houston Dynamo the weekend before at home.

  • Here's Johnston's team (3-4-1-2): Tony Meola - Jeff Parke, Carlos Mendes, Steve Jolley - Chris Henderson (Marvell Wynne 59), Mark Lisi (Mike Magee 56), Danny O'Rourke, Seth Stammler - Youri Djorkaeff - Jean Philippe Peguero, Edson Buddle. • The Red Bulls had scored first in each of their previous five matches. But they had just six points - a win and three draws - to show for their early advantages.

  • "Well, I said earlier in the week that I hope we go down 1-0. I wanted to see if we could fight back from it. Obviously, when we were going ahead in games we haven't been responding. Tonight I asked them to show some character and everybody stood up for themselves," Johnston said. "I obviously wasn't happy with the last 40 seconds, with Marvell (Wynne) moving up when he didn't need to be. But he's still learning that position."

  • Johnston also wanted to get a more consistent effort from the strike pairing of Buddle and Peguero, although they did score the two Red Bulls goals after the Galaxy took the lead in the 25th minute.

  • "I sat both of them down this week and told them that they're an exciting partnership. But for me, it's for 90 minutes. You have to be moving and controlling the ball for 90 minutes, Johnston said. "There were times in the game that we didn't have that, but there were times in the game where you could see they are very explosive."

  • For Buddle, it was his first goal since the season opener in a 2-2 draw with D.C. United on April 2. "My teammates did a good job in getting me going. I think they gave me the balls early so I could operate," he said. "(Jean Philippe) Peguero has done a good job of coming in and getting himself going so I think for me, [it's great] to get myself going, and tonight, finally getting a chance to score a goal."

  • Johnston was excited about the play of No. 1 overall pick Marvell Wynne, who again came on as a substitute in a wide midfield role.

  • "It's really the second game that the fans have seen Marvell in the midfield but we've been trying it all week. I'd like to see him with more of a starting position and then get behind people," he said. "The kid's athletic. There were times when he was in good position but we never found him. Certain balls from Jeff Parke, Marvell was in the wrong spot, but he still has a huge future with this club."

  • Mike Magee made his longest contribution since April 29. Magee had been sidelined with hand surgery and a bothersome ankle, and played for the first time since May 24. He has made just one start on the season.

  • "It was much better tonight when we tried to keep the ball and play quickly. It's good for the future because of a guy like Mike Magee, who can keep the ball and make good passes," Djorkaeff said. "The difference today was that we ran good tonight and looked strong. We need to continue like this to have more success. I'm happy with this."

  • Even after falling behind in the 25th minute, the Red Bulls trailed for just two minutes. They've now been behind for just 54 minutes in the 990 minutes they've played this year.

  • "We need to continue to focus to control the game - more, more, and more, so we don't just run after the ball. With Edson (Buddle) and Pedro (Jean Philippe Peguero) scoring goals like this we will have more success," Djorkaeff said. "We can't just win the games with big hearts all the time. Sometimes you have to keep in control, be very smart with your heads and be clever. When you have difficulties in these times and you only have one win, you have to be clever and use your experience like we did tonight, and it was very good."
