Red Bulls clinch playoff berth

SECAUCUS, NJ (Monday, October 8, 2007) - Tickets for the New York Red Bulls' home playoff match will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, October 11 beginning at 11:00 AM. On Tuesday, October 9 at 11:00 AM, Red Bulls season ticket holders who wish to add on additional playoff seats, plus anyone who purchased a half-season or four-game plan throughout this season, can purchase unlimited playoff seats at the group discount rate in an exclusive priority window. Student of the Game youth soccer partners can also purchase playoff seats during this window at the same discounted rate.


The Red Bulls' first round home match will either be Thursday, October 25 or Saturday, October 27 with times TBD. Individual tickets to the home playoff match are priced at $25 per seat, while groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $20 per seat. The Red Bulls clinched their spot in the MLS playoffs for the fifth consecutive season despite falling to Toronto FC 2-1 last Thursday. Even if the Red Bulls lose their two remaining games, none of the five teams currently below the playoff line can reach New York's current point total of 39 - except Los Angeles. For Los Angeles to reach 39 points, they must beat Chicago, who would then finish with a maximum of 39 points and finish behind NY in the three-way tiebreaker shown below.


LA: 2-0-0 v CHI, 1-1-0 v NY = 9 pts/4 gms (2.25)
NY: 2-0-1 v CHI, 1-1-0 v LA = 10 pts/5 gms (2.00)
CHI: 0-2-1 v NY, 0-2-0 v LA = 1 pt/5 gms (0.20)


Possible opponents for NY in the Eastern Conference Semifinal series:
• If NY finishes 3rd in the East, it will play the East's second seed in the first round (currently New England).
• If NY finishes 4th in the East, it will play the East's first seed in the first round (currently D.C. United).
• If NY finishes 5th in the East, it will play the first seed of the Western Conference in the first round (currently Chivas USA).


Ramifications of the Red Bulls' match this Saturday against the Kansas City Wizards at Giants Stadium (7:30 PM ET, TV: MSG2):
• If NY beats KC on Saturday, it will clinch 3rd place in the Eastern Conference and a first-round playoff series against the second seed. New York cannot have for home-field advantage in that series, even if it wins its two remaining games.
• If NY ties KC on Saturday, then KC could still overtake NY for 3rd place in the East in the final week (if KC wins at FC Dallas and NY loses at LA).
• If NY loses to KC on Saturday, KC will take over 3rd place in the East, but NY could retake that spot in the final week (if KC loses at FC Dallas and NY beats LA).
