NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH BRUCE ARENA
On the game:
"Well, it's one of those nights certainly [when] the ball bounced in our favor. Obviously, the early red card was the story of the game. I think it was the right decision by the referee.
"I think once we got the first goal, it took the wind out of their sails and gave our team some confidence. I think the second half certainly, [was] mentally a better performance on our part. I think we're really pleased tonight with the performance and the result."
On forward Edson Buddle:
"I think just getting a little bit of pressure off of him helps. I think it's a perfect situation for him to come into a game like that, be able to stay in front of the goal and get some service. Hopefully that's something that gives him confidence as we move forward."
On forward John Wolyniec:
"John was a good partner with (Buddle) tonight. John had a very good game tonight. That's why we have him here. We think John is a real solid player and a veteran guy, [and] his experience helps our team."
On his experience coaching the Red Bulls thus far:
"I could write a book on my experiences on coming back to MLS for three weeks. I think we have a lot of young players, they're learning as they go. I think without having a preseason with this team and a lot of other things, I think it's clearly going to be a work in progress."
On the team's performance in the first half:
"I think we were too anxious to try to make the one pass that would win the game. We needed to be a little bit more patient, play more balls [to] feet. I just think our approach to playing with an extra player in the first half was pretty poor. I didn't think we responded well in the first half and [we didn't] figure out what we needed to do."
On the team's second half substitutions:
"When [midfielder] Youri [Djorkaeff is] in the game, Youri's not going to be a guy that's pushed up high, playing with his back to the goal. When you have an extra player, you need to have at least two players in front of the goal. It's pretty obvious we needed another player up top there. Edson and John made their presence known and were in position to get some looks at goals."
On the team's progress in his tenure:
"I really think from the games I've had here from the Barcelona exhibition (on Aug. 12) through this, I think we've made some progress every game."
On the six goals:
"Certainly we never anticipated a margin like that tonight, but I think it's something that we're probably not going to see here for a while."

On scoring after long drought:
"I guess it works out sometimes. Sometimes you press and try to go after it, and then some nights like tonight it just comes to you."
On receiving quality service:
"I just made the most of it today. There are times where I've had some chances, especially early on in the year, and it didn't quite go my way, but tonight, the service was there and I was able to put it away. I think everyone here knew I was eager to score, I was trying to get after it."

On his first league goal as a Red Bull:
"It was great to finally score as a Red Bull, and to do it against my old team was special for me. It's always great when you score and you win, and [when] it's at home, it's a kind of perfect situation."

On the game:
"Three points today is what we were looking for today one way or another, and to make a statement like that is good."
On the start of the scoring:
"I think we wore them down. They got fatigued playing a man down for the entire game essentially and we started to put them under pressure by getting balls in the box and making them face their own goal for a little bit. Once we got the first one, it was kind of like 'alright.' We took a deep breath and then we just kept going."
On his goal:
"You have to celebrate those when they come. I know it was a fifth goal but it was still fun."

On Edson Buddle:
"He's an amazing talent and obviously he showed that in the second half today coming on the field and getting three goals in one half. If he's going to play like that, this team has a lot of potential and can go real far."
On the play in the second half:
"We moved the ball around a lot better. We came out a little 'iffy' in the first few minutes, but once we settled down with Edson up front and Youri [doing] a little bit more patrolling, I think it really helped."

On what head coach Bruce Arena talked about at halftime:
"He told us just to possess the ball, get out wide, get up the field. Maybe since [Jeff] Cunningham was up by himself, the wide defenders could push up a bit. We don't need four guys in the back marking one. That's just what we did: we pushed up more, we got more into the attack and got forward."
REAL SALT LAKE HEAD COACH JOHN ELLINGER
On his team's performance:
"It just got uglier and uglier and it's an ugly loss but it's only one loss. I still believe in these guys and it's out of our system and we'll move on to Wednesday (at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy)."
On what went wrong in the second half:
"We didn't do a lot of things we talked about at halftime. The blame seemed to be spread out instead of taking individual responsibility. We need to be more responsible with what we needed to do."
On Jack Stewart's red card in the eighth minute:
"I thought it was extremely soft. I didn't see the replay but I remember seeing the contact and with only nine minutes into the game ... whatever."
On the team's upcoming schedule:
"D.C. lost to L.A. (5-2), so it makes Wednesday's game pretty important against L.A. and Saturday against Colorado. We have specific goals for the second half of the season and we can still accomplish them."
REAL SALT LAKE FORWARD JASON KREIS
On the game:
"We refuse to hang our heads about it. We suffered what we thought was a difficult decision in the first half and New York was a good enough team to exploit that and they did the job. The back breaker was the first goal. We were a little bit disappointed with how we reacted after that, but we'll move on. We have (moved on) all year and we will this time as well."
On any positives drawn from tonight:
"I think the first half was a super effort on our parts. A lot of guys put a lot into it to keep the score line 0-0 in the first half, so we'll take the first 45 minutes out of here and try to move on. We know we need 90 (minutes), and to be honest with you, we haven't played good for 90 minutes in a while so we'll try to focus on that."
On the team's effort after allowing a goal early in the second half:
"We all quit a little bit and took the notion that we had no chance now and probably shouldn't have done that. It happened, it's over and done with."
REAL SALT LAKE DEFENDER EDDIE POPE
On how disappointing the loss is:
"It was disappointing because we were down a man early. I thought we finished out that half very, very well. To give up a goal early (in the second half) and then collapse, it was very disappointing."
On whether the second half was a breakdown of tactics or effort:
"I think it was a little bit more lack of effort, especially once a couple of goals were given up. I think as a team, we have to be disappointed in that because that's something we can control no matter what. That is not acceptable and I will let the team know that tonight."
