Real Salt Lake reserves win 4-1 over Valley United Wednesday night

Forward Jamie Watson scored in the second half for Real Salt Lake.

FRESNO, CA - Real Salt Lake FW Chris Brown scored in the 24th and 43rd minutes to stake Real Salt Lake to a 2-1 halftime lead, while MF Jamie Watson and BYU trialist Steve Magleby added second half strikes to thrust RSL to a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, Calif., against the Valley United Soccer League All-Stars.

MF Andy Williams set up both of the veteran Brown's first-half strikes. In the 24th minute, Williams sent a high, arcing ball between the Valley United back line and their 'keeper, allowing Chris Brown to run onto the bouncing ball and slam it home for the game's first goal.

RSL started the game in a 4-5-1 formation, with No. 4 overall draft pick Chris Seitz starting in goal, behind a backline of Steven Curfman, Nik Besagno, Dusty Kirby and Chris Lancos lining up left-to-right. MF Kenny Cutler and Duke Hashimoto shared space behind playmaker Williams in the center, while Atiba Harris lined up at left mid, with Kyle Brown on the right wing and Chris Brown as the lone striker up top.

After FW Harris was brought down twice just outside the box in the 35th and 40th minutes, with both Williams' free kicks sailing just wide, RSL struck again in the 43rd minute. Taking the ball 25 yards out, Williams chipped a left-footed ball over the defense to Brown, who settled the pass, took an extra touch and found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Shortly before halftime, Valley United cut the RSL lead in half, seizing a Curfman turnover on the left side and sending a point-blank offering past Seitz. Early in the game, Seitz came up with two big saves to deny Valley in the first and 11th minutes, while Hashimoto cleared a corner kick off the line in the 14th minute.

RSL Reserve Head Coach Peter Mellor made six substitutions at halftime: GK Kyle Reynish entered for Seitz, with Joey Worthen coming in at left back for Curfman; in the midfield, Generation adidas players Jamie Watson and Christian Jimenez were inserted on the right and left wings for Kyle Brown and Atiba Harris, while Magleby came in for Williams in midfield. Up top, former University of New Mexico star Jeff Rowland came on for Chris Brown.

In the second half, Reynish kept RSL ahead with saves in the 62nd and 65th minutes, before Watson took a Cutler ball on the right side in the 81st minute and broke free to send RSL ahead 3-1. In the 86th minute, a Jimenez corner kick found Rowland in the box, and his offering was tapped home by Magleby for the final 4-1 margin.

RSL GK Chris Seitz and MF Freddy Adu travel Thursday to Frisco, Tex., for U.S. U-20 camp, while the rest of RSL remain in Fresno preparing for Saturday's game at Chukchansi Park against the USL PDL Fresno Fuego, returning to Salt Lake on Sunday. The team will be off on Monday, prior to training in SLC on Tuesday and traveling to St. George on Wednesday.
