Real Salt Lake continues 2007 preseason in Florida

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake arrived in Orlando, Fla., Sunday night as Head Coach John Ellinger and the 28 players who participated in drills and fitness testing last week will be joined by the team's four Supplemental Draft picks. Old Dominion MF Jared Kent, Ohio State MF Dustin Kirby, N.C. State DF Haddon Kirk and UC-Santa Barbara GK Kyle Reynish met the team last night and will see their first MLS preseason action during this afternoon's training session.

Veteran RSL DF Danny Torres' arrival is expected on Tuesday following visa procurement delays in his native Costa Rica. However, Torres - who started 16 games last season in the RSL defense before an ankle injury suffered in late July knocked him out for the year - will not arrive in time for either of RSL's Tuesday "split-squad' games. In the morning, RSL will play at Central Florida at 7:30 a.m. MT, and will remain on campus for its 10:00 a.m. contest against Swedish club GAIS.

For the third consecutive season, RSL will participate in the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Game against the Columbus Crew, to be held on Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. MT. One day later RSL will face MLS Eastern Conference foe Chicago Fire as part of Disney's Presidents' Day Soccer Festival IX festivities, with the New York Red Bulls providing the competition on Sunday night. While in Orlando, RSL will also compete in scrimmages against Swedish First Division club GAIS, the University of Central Florida and Stetson University sides.

RSL will continue to train without a key offseason acquisition, Panamanian striker Luis Tejada, due to the forward's bid to help Panama qualify for this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup. Panama drew Sunday with Honduras, 1-1, and plays Costa Rica Tuesday night in a match that can be seen on Galavision. Tejada started and played all 90 minutes in yesterday's draw, seeing a 40th-minute equalizer disallowed due to an offsides call and watching as his apparent game-winning assist in the 90th minute was nullified when a teammate, again offside, played a ball on the goal line instead of letting it trickle into the goal. Tejada was also cautioned in the 27th minute, committing a hard foul shortly after the Panama own goal allowed Honduras to take the 1-0 lead.

Two Real Salt Lake players - GK Chris Seitz and FW Jamie Watson - departed on Saturday for a two-week U.S. Soccer training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., where the squad will prepare for a two-match tour of Japan. This is the first gathering of the U-23 MNT since the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in August of 2004, and the first under interim U.S. Head Coach Bob Bradley. The team will leave on Feb. 16 for Japan, where the U-23s will play two matches, against the Japan Under-22 Men's National Team on Feb. 21 and a Japanese club team two days later.

Voted the MVP of the 2005 Gold Cup as Panama dropped a penalty-kick shootout to the United States, Tejada arrives in Salt Lake City on Feb. 21, joining Watson and Seitz for RSL's preseason training stint in Madrid, Spain, from Feb. 26-March 9.
