Real Madrid star undergoes surgery

Ruud van Nistelrooy sustained the injury to his right ankle in Real Madrid's 2-0 defeat to Almeria on February 2.

Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to undergo surgery on his right ankle, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Holland international initially sustained the injury in the 2-0 defeat to Almeria on February 2 but continued to be hampered after returning to the side and limped out of the defeat to Getafe on February 24.

The 31-year-old, who has scored 16 goals this season, has flown to Amsterdam for the operation.

It is not yet known how long Van Nistelrooy will be sidelined for but it is thought the Spanish champions are anticipating being without the former Manchester United frontman for around six weeks.

If that is the case, the frontman could return for the final four games of the season against Osasuna, Barcelona, Real Zaragoza and Levante.
