Real Betis handed two-match ban, loss

Athletic were awarded a 2-1 win, which was how the scoreline stood when GK Armando Ribeiro was struck in the head by a bottle.

MADRID - Real Betis have been handed a two-match stadium ban by the Spanish FA's Competition Committee for the bottle-throwing incident which caused the abandonment of their home game against Athletic Bilbao last weekend.

Athletic were also awarded a 2-1 win, which was how the scoreline stood when the match was called off with 18 minutes remaining at Betis' Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium.

Athletic goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro was struck in the face by the bottle which was thrown from the stands behind the goal.

Armando, who was bleeding from a cut just below his right eye, was stretchered off the pitch and referee Carlos Clos Gomez subsequently took the teams off.

A man was immediately taken into custody by the authorities after being identified by nearby Betis fans and, after spending Saturday and Sunday night in custody, was released on bail on Monday.

The president of the RFEF's Competition Committee, Alfredo Florez, revealed the swift apprehension of the man involved meant Betis avoided a four-match ground ban.

"The quick identification of the aggressor has been an extenuating factor in the sanctions against the Seville club," he said.

"Those around the aggressor reacted immediately in identifying him, stopping him and handing him over to the police."

Florez also explained why the Committee decided to award the match to Athletic rather then replay the fixture.

"(When play was halted) there were only a few minutes left and Athletic had already made their three substitutions and had had to continue with 10 players and without their goalkeeper," Florez added.

"That goes against the fairness of the competition."

Betis have been given a 10-day deadline if they wish to appeal the decision.
