NEW YORK RED BULLS 2, SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 0

NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO

On the result:
"I am pleased with the result and what pleases me the most is we managed to keep a clean sheet with a good response in the second half to individual players that I had something to say at halftime about. In the end over the 90 minutes, we were the better team with the better options and we deserved three points and we start preparing for Thursday's game."

On Jozy Altidore and the tactics used on him in the first half:
"I think that they tried to frustrate him and they were doing a good job at it. I said a couple things to him for the second half at the break and in the second half, he dominated the game. He got a penalty and a goal, so good for him."

On Mike Magee:
"We know what Mike brings to the table. He has that final pass, he can keep good possession and he has an eye for a goal, so good for him too. We just have to manage how we bring him back to full game fitness because as you know last year, he hasn't been playing football for the last three years. It's like what we have been saying with Kevin (Goldthwaite). It's been a nagging injury here and there but if we manage to keep them healthy then I think it will contribute a great deal for the benefit of the club."

On Claudio Reyna:
"Again, I think that as I have stated before, a healthy Claudio is a very influential player. He showed today he can play as a playmaker or as a second midfielder, central midfielder and both positions he played very well. He competed very well and I think he did a lot of good for the final score."

On John Wolyniec battling today:
"That's effective football. I kept saying to him, that's your strength. Just get a hold of the ball and at the end it will pay off for you and I think he did. He battles for 90 minutes, and he made the center backs know they weren't playing the proper game. He showed us at the end what we need to be appreciative of."

NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER MIKE MAGEE

On the penalty kick:
"It felt pretty incredible. They put me on for 45 minutes and I played my best. Someone played a great through ball, Jozy (Altidore) makes a great play and gets fouled and luckily, he let me take it."

On how the decision was made of who would take the kick:
"I don't know. Jozy (Altidore) looked like he wanted to take it, so I put on my saddest face and asked him please, and he let me."

On if he knew where he was going to place the kick:
"I knew where I was going the whole time. Joe Cannon was actually standing to the side I wanted to go to, so it threw me off a little bit, but I was going there either way."

On scoring again after over a year of being scoreless:
"It's been a long and tough road for me with a lot of ups and downs, with some injury problems, so to finally get a goal, it makes all the rehab and time spent on the bicycle worth it."

On if he is completely healthy:
"I'm slowly getting better. Not 100 percent yet. My finish isn't all the way there and I'm still coming back from little injuries."

NEW YORK RED BULLS FORWARD JOZY ALTIDORE

On the game:
"It was a really tough first half. Nick Garcia and their defense are pretty aggressive and it definitely frustrated me a bit and it got to me and it wasn't something I liked but it's part of the game and I have to get used to that. It's not based on one guy's performance, it's based on the team's performance."

On drawing the penalty kick:
"It was a great ball from (John) Wolyniec with a lot of space, the most space I saw all game, and I just decided to go at the defender and he made a mistake and we got the penalty."

On his late goal:
"It was a tough game and when you get a goal, it's strange. You know, sometimes you play the best games and you can't get a goal, and then you play not such a great game and you do get a goal but at the same time, I think we did well. Johnny (Wolyniec) gave me a great ball and it was a team goal, and a team effort."

On his discussion with Mike Magee over who was going to take the penalty kick:
"Mike (Magee) deserves it. He worked so hard and I think he deserves his chances and I think you are going to see a lot more from him."

NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER CLAUDIO REYNA

On the game:
"It took us a little while to get going in the first half, but the best thing is we played well defensively and as a whole team. The second half we probably controlled the game a little better in terms of being more in their half, so with that, we were able to create more chances. I think they only had that one good chance where Jon (Conway) made a great save, but that was it."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP

On the outcome of the game:
"We struggled trying to get a grip on the game. Not to blame the field, but it's never easy to play on the other team's field, especially when they're pressuring you. The first half at times, we did a good job stopping their pressure. It seemed like a stalemate game until the penalty and obviously that changes the game."

On containing Jozy Altidore:
"When you're in good positions you can sort of defend against him, but once you get pulled out in a position where you can't do it, he's dangerous. We kind of lost the ball in the middle of the field a few times. Once you get him running at you, he's dangerous."

On halftime adjustments:
"For us, we had to make sure we were prepared to get a clean sheet in the second half. I didn't think we looked like we were going to win the game, to be honest, but I didn't think they really did either. You just hope to get through the game with maybe not playing great but getting a point at the very least. The goal at the end was really icing on the cake for them. I was hoping to at least come out of here with a point."

On Peguero Jean Phillipe's appearance:
"We didn't get the ball to him enough. I thought we should have played the ball as early as we could just to give him a chance to get around their defenders. He did OK. He looked quite lively when he came on. He doesn't know the players, he only trained with us three or four days, so he'll get used to the guys. But he looked lively."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER NICK GARCIA

On the outcome:
"Being on the road, you want at least a point, if not three. For us, it was frustrating because we played the Red Bulls in the preseason and did quite well. The surface doesn't help but it's no excuse. We didn't possess the ball enough to be dangerous going forward. We definitely have to do better going forward and be more creative."

On the foul leading to the penalty kick:
"The ball could have bounced the other way and it could not have been a PK. He played it well, I think we caught ourselves a little out of position and maybe were not ready for the ball. Maybe the penalty is not called if we're at home."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD PEGUERO JEAN PHILLIPE

On his first game with the Earthquakes:
"It feels good to be out there. It's disappointing at the same time. We should have a result but we didn't get it. Got a couple games coming up, so we just got to get ready for the next game."

On his appearance:
"I'm trying to get in and get some chances, get some crosses. It's hard sometimes but I'm happy to be here and looking forward to help get the guys better."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER RYAN COCHRANE

On the foul leading to the penalty kick:
"It's a tough call. At that point in time, the referee was deciding the game, it could have went either way. I saw a couple odd calls today, a lot of them that weren't even close that should have went the other way. In the end, we didn't play well enough to win the game, and probably should have got a tie at the least. We didn't have that killer instinct today and hopefully we can rebound."
