Quick Hits: Colorado Rapids

OUTLOOK

With injuries sidelining at least three starters, the Rapids could get off to a rocky start to the 2008 season. But can they afford it? Clavijo hasn't received a contract extension and if the Rapids stumble out of the gate, might patience be lost with the former U.S. international? One thing is certain, with three of their first five games away from home, the emphasis on beating the Galaxy and San Jose in their first two games at Dick's Sporting Goods Park is massive, especially after winning just six games in Commerce City last year.

GRADING THE SEASON

Clavijo said that making the playoffs isn't the goal. The Rapids want to compete in international competitions and that invitation would require an MLS Cup appearance. But realistically, Colorado would be happy with a return to the postseason, especially with the addition of expansion San Jose in the Western Conference. The key, though, will be if the Rapids can generate enough offense.

NEWCOMER(S) WITH THE BIGGEST IMPACT

Technically, Christain Gomez is a newcomer, at least in Colorado, but we'll go with another Gomes -- Rafael -- instead. Actually they go hand in hand, because if Gomes is able to make a seamless transition to MLS and partner well with Mastroeni in the defensive midfield, it would give Gomez -- Christian that is -- even more freedom in the attack.
