Peru pouts, Brazil bends in WCQ draw

A 1-1 draw against Brazil was bitter sweet for Peru who scored late, but still came away winless in World Cup qualifiers.

Peru coach disappointed

LIMA - Peru coach Jose del Solar admitted the 1-1 draw with Brazil was not an ideal result as they remain without a win in the South American 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

It was the second draw in three games for both sides, with Brazil in third spot with five points and Peru still without a win with two. Argentina top the table with nine points.

AC Milan midfielder Kaka put Brazil ahead just before the break with a superb shot from outside the area.

But Peru equalised in the 70th minute as Juan Vargas' deflected shot beat goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

"If we had beaten Paraguay here in the first round, it would have been good. Now, we must beat Ecuador in Quito," said Del Solar.

"But to get over a one-goal deficit and equalise against a team like Brazil is not easy. We also had chances to win."

Nolberto Solano is suspended for Wednesday's game with Ecuador while Brazil's Lucio is also suspended for their game against Uruguay.

Brazil are still without an away victory, having drawn with Colombia last month and Juan cannot understand why they are unable to win on the road.

"Before the game, [Brazil head coach] Dunga made reminded us how important winning outside Brazil is. We went ahead, we could have won the game, but unfortunately we failed.

"Now, we must beat Uruguay at home. It's a crucial game towards qualification for the World Cup Finals."

Dunga, meanwhile, had no complaints with result, admitting a draw was fair.

He said: "Football is not a matter of deserving or not deserving. You must score goals. We had some opportunities but I think it's a fair result.

"It's not a surprising result. We knew the Peruvian players' quality as several of them play in Europe. If they play other national teams as they did today, their future is promising."

Brazil holds onto third spot with draw

LIMA - Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw with Peru on Sunday in the final game of the third round of the South American World Cup qualifiers.

It was the second draw in three games for both sides, with Brazil in third spot with five points and Peru still without a win with two. Argentina top the table with nine points.

Brazil made a promising first half as they kept Peru goalkeeper Diego Penny busy in the opening exchanges.

The Coronel Bolognesi custodian saved a Robinho shot in the 37th minute after great play by Kaka, but was unable to do anything when the AC Milan midfielder put the Selecao ahead two minutes later.

After a defensive mistake, Kaka opened the scoring with a tremendous shot from outside the box.

Brazil could have gone into the break with a two-goal advantage but Penny turned a Kaka shot behind for a corner.

Peru came out attacking after the break as they searched for an equaliser.

And in the 70th minute they managed to find the breakthrough they needed as Juan Vargas' deflected shot beat goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Brazil were denied a late winner only by the woodwork when, in the third minute of injury time, a corner-kick by Ronaldinho - who making his return from an ankle injury - was headed towards the goal by Lucio but his effort rattled crossbar.

Peru meet Ecuador on Wednesday while Brazil host Uruguay in Sao Paulo.
