D.C. United has re-signed 2006 Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year Troy Perkins, the club announced Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We are please to have concluded a new deal that is well-deserved for Troy," said United technical director Dave Kasper. "He is a determined young goalkeeper who is far from reaching his true potential and we look forward to many years with Troy having a significant role with our club."
Perkins was the clear winner of the league's goalkeeping award, outpacing Joe Cannon of the Colorado Rapids and Matt Reis of the New England Revolution. Perkins started all but two matches for the Black-and-Red in 2006, and he led the league in wins with 15. He was also third in shutouts (8), goals against average (1.13) and saves (100).
The Worthington, Ohio native was honored for his achievements by being selected to both the RadioShack Best XI and the MLS All-Star team. Perkins played the first half of the league's summer showcase against Chelsea FC, helping backstop a 1-0 shutout.
Perkins joined United as an undrafted free agent in 2004. That year, he split time between the pipes with Nick Rimando as United won their fourth MLS Cup title.
