Newcastle scores goal with 'Keeper coach

Recently hired goalkeeping coach Paul Barron points to Newcastle's Tim Krul (above) as a "very promising" talent.

Paul Barron has been confirmed as Newcastle's new goalkeeping coach after leaving derby rivals Middlesbrough.

The 54-year-old worked with his new charges for the first time this morning after replacing Terry Gennoe following his departure last month because of a long-standing back injury.

Barron told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "I am delighted to be here and cannot wait to get down to work with our four keepers.

"I was very happy at Middlesbrough, but this is a great opportunity and I am very much looking forward to it.

"Of course I know all about the quality of the goalkeepers at this club and it is great to work with top players.

"It is not just Shay (Given) and Steve (Harper), but Fraser Forster and Tim Krul are also very promising young goalkeepers.

"The potential at this club is huge and I am looking forward to being part of it."

Barron's playing career included spells with Plymouth, Arsenal, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Stoke, QPR and Reading.

He has coached at Coventry, QPR and West Brom and joined Boro from Aston Villa following Steve McClaren's appointment as manager during the summer of 2001.
