Moreno called up to Bolivian national team

Jaime Moreno

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United announced today Major League Soccer's all-time leading goal scorer, Jaime Moreno, has been called up to the Bolivian National Team for two World Cup qualifying games. Moreno and Bolivia will play at Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday, November 17 and at Venezuela in San Cristobal on Tuesday, November 20 in the third and fourth round of South American qualifying.

Moreno has enjoyed a major resurgence in international duty this year. After making his debut as Bolivia's youngest player in the 1994 World Cup, he became a fixture on the National Team roster throughout most of the 1990s. His most recent call-up is the fifth time this season that Bolivia has called on the 33-year-old striker. The first came on May 26 in a friendly against Ireland. Moreno then participated in the 2007 Copa America with his national side. Although the international foray temporarily stalled Moreno's pursuit of the MLS scoring record, he was able to tally two important goals for his country including the equalizer in a 2-2 draw with tournament host Venezuela. Moreno's most recent call-up with the team was on October 13, where Bolivia lost 0-5 to Uruguay, also a World Cup qualifier. He did not see action in Bolivia's following qualifier, a 0-0 draw with Colombia in La Paz on October 17th. For his career, Moreno has played in 70 total games with the Bolivian National Team and scored 11 goals.

Putting together yet another banner season for United, Moreno achieved unparalleled heights when he became the League's all-time leading goal-scorer. The record-setting strike - his 109th goal - came on a penalty in the team's 3-1 win over New York on 8/22 for which he also won Goal of the Week Honors (Week 21). He finished the season with seven goals - for a total of 112 - and also added six assists in 21 games (15 starts).
