Mo Johnston blog: Aug. 23

We play D.C. on Saturday at BMO Field and we are hungry for points.

Now we know: Jeff Cunningham, and Ronnie O'Brien as well as Greg Sutton won't be back this year because of injuries.

Nobody wanted to lose these players. It has made our season even more challenging but our task is now clear. It's time to get about our businesses.

Having young players stepping up and getting more playing time will benefit our kids. They are going to be better and more knowledgeable because of this experience.

We also need veterans. We need Collin Samuel to step up and assume the scoring mantle from Jeff Cunningham. We need Danny Dichio to break through for us.

We know we have our hands full against United. They have a core group of players that has been together a long time.

Jaime Moreno is the all-time MLS leader in goals with 109. Their midfielder, Fred, just Fred, takes people on, links up well and he's come up with the odd goal. We may be getting a break, Luciano Emilio is a terrific scorer but he has a leg injury and may miss the game.

Pretty well every team that has come to BMO Field has been given a rough go. We expect what we have been getting all year, boisterous support from our fans.

We realize what's in front of us. If we fall short, it won't from a lack of trying.
