FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas today announced that forward Roberto Mina will undergo surgery to remove the damaged portion of the medial meniscus in his left knee. The surgery will be performed on Thursday, May 10 at a local Baylor facility. He is expected to be out of action for four weeks.
Mina was injured in the team's final preseason game on March 31 versus Brazilian-club Atletico Paranaense at Pizza Hut Park. An MRI conducted on Monday, April 2 revealed that Mina had suffered a Grade 2 Plus MCL sprain. While rehabbing the torn MCL, team doctors determined that there was also damage to the medial meniscus in the same knee.
The 22-year old Mina missed the second half of the 2006 regular season after undergoing surgery on July 12, 2006 to repair a tear in the same left medial meniscus. He returned in time for the 2006 playoffs but did not play in either playoff game. The last game he played in was on July 4, 2006 versus D.C. United.
Other injury updates:
• Defender David Wagenfuhr, who has been out of action since suffering a concussion on Sunday, April 15 against the New York Red Bulls, returned to practice last week and is available for selection.
• Midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, who has been out of action since spraining his right MCL on April 12 versus the Los Angeles Galaxy, returned to full training today. He is also expected to be available for selection.
• Defender Alex Yi, who missed the April 29 game versus New England with a strained left calf, also returned to practice today and will be available for selection.
• Defender Michael Dello-Russo, who was on the 18-man day of game roster on April 29, is out with tendonitis due to a stress related injury in his right foot. He will wear a boot for the next week before being re-evaluated.
• Defender Adrian Serioux continues rehabbing his left knee. Serioux underwent surgery on Feb. 20 after team doctors determined he had Osteochronditis Dessicans (OCD). Serioux is on schedule to return in approximately two months.
FC Dallas will travel to face the Kansas City Wizards on Sat., May 12 at 7 p.m. in a game shown live locally on FSN Southwest. The team's next home game is on Sun., May 20 when Freddy Adu and Real Salt Lake visit Pizza Hut Park (6 p.m.). The first 5,000 kids 16 and under that enter the stadium on May 20 will receive a free FC Dallas replica jersey t-shirt.
