Milan mount Serie A return to top vs. Empoli

Milan's Alberto Gilardino (top) and company hope to erase their losing streak and create Serie A title hopes.

MILAN - AC Milan will be desperate to end their winless run at the San Siro when they face Empoli on Sunday.

The Rossoneri haven't won at home in Serie A since April 21, when they beat Cagliari.

Carlo Ancelotti's side did end a poor run of form by thrashing Lazio 5-1 in Rome two weeks ago, a result that saw them climb to eighth in the standings, seven points behind leaders Internazionale.

That result calmed the nerves of club owner Silvio Berlusconi, who earlier this month described his team's dismal start to the campaign as: "The darkest period of his presidency.

"We've had a somewhat unlucky start to the season but we are recovering," said Berlusconi this week.

"We still have to be the kind of team that, from the first minute, makes it clear we want to win and dominate the match."

Ancelotti will not have Brazil striker Ronaldo available as he has yet to recover from the hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined for three months.

The Rossoneri will be relying on Alberto Gilardino to provide the answers in attack after the Italian international ended his goalscoring drought by striking twice against Lazio.

Empoli travel to Milan looking to put behind them their 3-0 defeat against Tuscan neighbours Siena, a result that saw them drop into the relegation zone.

Empoli will not fancy their chances having only managed to collect one point on their travels so far this season.

The Tuscan side have only won once against Milan at the San Siro and that was back in 2003.

Empoli will be desperate for points as they have games against Roma and Juventus on the horizon.

"Perhaps we lack a little bit of determination and fortune in front of goal," said Empoli midfielder Davide Moro.

"But in recent weeks we have shown that we are alive, that we have quality."

Empoli coach Luigi Cagni welcomes back Vittorio Tosto and Ighli Vannucchi, who have recovered from minor injuries.

However, the visitors will be without defender Daniele Adani, who serves a one-match ban.
