Mexican Primera Division Round Up

Two more coaches found themselves out of a job following Week 11. Following a 3-1 loss at the hands of Toluca, América fired Coach Luis Fernando Tena. Tena will be replaced by Daniel "Ruso" Brailovsky who starred for America in the 1980s and has served as a commentator for ESPN for the last several years. Veracruz lost on Friday to Atlante and fired its coach Nery Pumpido on Sunday. Veracruz hired former Mexican league star Antonio Mohammed as its new manager.

Former Cruz Azul and new Monterrey coach Isaac Mizrahi returned to Cruz Azul's "Estadio Azul" this Saturday to face his old team. While Monterrey went up in the first half thanks to a goal from Carlos Ochoa, Cruz Azul answered back with two brilliant goals from teenager Cesar Villaluz. Villaluz, who starred on the Mexican U-20 team this past summer at the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Canada, had been ignored during Mizrahi's tenure at Cruz Azul despite outcry from the fans and media.

With new coach Tomas Boy at the helm, Atlas finally achieved its first victory during the current season with a tight 3-2 victory over Guadalajara rivals Tecos on Saturday night. Atlas, however, are still in 1-8-2 and in last place of the league.

Undefeated clubs Santos and Atlante remain unbeaten after Week 11. Atlante won on Friday 2-0 in Veracruz thanks to goals from David Toledo and star striker Giancarlo Maldonado. Santos, currently in first place with a 8-0-3 record, got a hard fought 3-2 win over surging Pumas. Ecuadorian striker Christian Benitez scored two goals for Santos; bring his tally to 7 goals in 10 games.
