Los Angeles Galaxy sign Canadian midfielder Harmse

CARSON, Calif. - The Los Angeles Galaxy today officially signed Canadian National Team midfielder Kevin Harmse. The 22-year old Vancouver, British Columbia native will take up one of the three Youth International spots on the Galaxy roster. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

"Kevin is a good, young player who has done very well in the time that he has been with us," Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop said. "He adds some toughness to our midfield and has a bright future ahead of him."

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa on July 4, 1984, Harmse has spent time with Tromsø Idrettslag of the Norwegian Tippeligaen, FC Nitra of Slovakia's Corgon Liga and the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL First Division. He signed with Tromsø in 2003 after going on trial with Bayern Munich and Benfica. After just more than a year in Norway, Harmse returned home to Vancouver to sign with the Whitecaps. In two years with Vancouver, Harmse appeared in 39 games, tallying a goal and two assists before heading to Slovakia where he spent a year with FC Nitra.

On March 25, 2007, Harmse made his debut for the Canadian National Team, coming on as a second half substitute and playing the final 15 minutes in a 3-0 win over Bermuda. Prior to making his full National Team debut, Harmse appeared in five game with the Canadian Under-23 National Team, scoring twice, and was capped 17 times by the Under-20 National Team. In 2003, he helped Canada's U-20's reach the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Youth Championships.
