Levante players threaten strike over wages

Levante's entire squad have threatened to go on a 48-hour strike over unpaid wages during the weekend of their Primera Liga match against Recreativo Huelva.

In a letter released to the media, the players announced their unanimous decision to strike on April 26 and 27, the weekend they are due to play against Recreativo in Andalucia, unless a solution to the club's financial problems is found.

The club has been in financial turmoil for some time and the club's players are reportedly still owed wages from this season plus a large part of their wages from last year, as well as a number of promised bonuses which have not been paid.

In late November last year, a deal was struck with the Valencia City Council, who agreed to pay the club four million euros in exchange for Levante making their training ground and other facilities open to the public, but that has failed to ease the problems.

At a press conference called by the players on Thursday afternoon one of the club captains, Luis Manuel Rubiales, handed a letter to the press signed by all the players, which outlined their demands.

It read: "We want it to be made clear that the club is the one who is not doing their duty, and the Valencia City Council the ones who are able and who took on the promise to make sure that all the players are paid before June 30.

"I think that we have worked hard and honourably, but we have arrived at the conclusion that if there is no solution before the match against Recreativo, we will strike.

"This is a legal measure, not a sign that are quitting or giving up, we will keep up and remain open to negotiations, but we will take this all the way."

This is the second time that the players have threatened strike action. In February the first and second squad held a public demonstration at the end of training claiming the club owed them between 60 and 80% of their wages from the past season as well as 85% of wages from this season.

On that occasion no strike was held.

Now, however, the players have the added frustration of having to cope with the departure of head coach Gianni Di Biasi, who left the club on Wednesday to join Italian side Torino.

Last week, before Di Biasi's departure, Rubiales announced that the players would give the club until after this weekend's game with Getafe. However, now it seems that their patience has ran out.

Rubiales claims that the players also have the support of the club's fans throughout the ordeal.

He told reporters: "I have spoken to the president and various members of the supporters group who even offered us their premises to hold this press conference."

Levante have remained at the foot of La Liga all season, where they remain now on 22 points.

They are 15 adrift of Recreativo and safety with six games remaining, meaning the clash between the two sides could be the game in which Levante are officially relegated to the Segunda Division.
