LA's Donovan takes weekly award

NEW YORK - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for his performance in the Galaxy's 3-1 win over Chivas USA on Saturday, April 28 in which he scored a goal and tallied two assists.

Donovan scored his first goal of the 2007 season in the eighth minute, when he swooped in to convert after a miscue between Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defender Claudio Suarez. His first assist of the evening came nine minutes later on a give-and-go play with Kevin Harmse. Donovan slotted a short pass between two defenders to Harmse, who knifed into the Chivas USA penalty area and beat Guzan to the lower left corner of the goal. Donovan helped put the game out of reach in the 78th minute. With his team up 2-1, Donovan controlled the ball in midfield and raced down right side, hurdled a tackle attempt by Lawson Vaughn, and found an onrushing Cobi Jones in front of the net. The ball reached Jones in stride and he buried it into the back of the net.

Donovan has one goal and three assists through three games played. The Los Angeles Galaxy are 1-1-1 this season. In his seventh MLS season, Donovan has been named MLS Player of the Week five times, twice with the San Jose Earthquakes and three times with the Galaxy. The Galaxy are back in action versus the New England Revolution on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET in a game broadcast exclusively on HDNet.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
