CARSON, CA - Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Kyle Martino underwent surgery today on his left hip to repair a torn labrum, the club announced. Dr. Richard Steadman of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic performed the surgery in Vail, Colorado. Martino, who injured the hip on a tackle late in the Galaxy's 1-0 loss to Colorado on August 12, is expected to need six to eight weeks to fully recover.
"We are disappointed to lose Kyle for this stretch," Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop said. "We wish him all the best in recovering from this injury and hope that he can return to the field soon to help the Galaxy."
Acquired by the Galaxy on May 12 along with forward John Wolyniec in a trade with Columbus for Ned Grabavoy and Joseph Ngwenya, Martino has appeared in eight games for the Galaxy in 2006, registering one assist. Martino, 25, has played in a total of 14 MLS regular season matches, scoring one goal this season, a game-winner against L.A. on April 22 when he was with the Crew.
In addition, Los Angeles will not have the services of midfielder Paulo Nagamura, who suffered a concussion in training on Tuesday, August 15 after a ball struck him on the side of his head. Nagamura, who joined the Galaxy in March 2005, has appeared in 45 games and recorded five assists from 2005-06.
