Koeman denies Valencia job is in jeopardy

VALENCIA - Valencia coach Ronald Koeman has dismissed speculation he has two games to save his job.

Valencia have taken just six points from a possible 30 since Koeman replaced Quique Sanchez Flores in the hotseat back in November, and on Sunday slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Almeria.

Reports in Spain on Tuesday suggested elimination from the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night - Los Che hold a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Atletico Madrid in their quarter-final tie - and failure to beat Valladolid in the league at the weekend would see Koeman sacked.

The Dutchman gave little credence to the rumours, however.

"What they publish is lies," he said.

"I have not read the press for three weeks and I don't want to answer these questions. It is a world that I do not understand."

Koeman also refused to dwell on reports former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been lined up to take over at the Mestalla.

"I am just worried about the team, the fans and the president," he added.

He did concede, though, that the match against Atletico had now taken on extra importance, given their struggles in the Primera Liga.

He said: "We were very disappointed by the defeat the other day (against Almeria).

"The Copa del Rey is very important because to be in the semi-finals means you are closer to a title and to a place in Europe."
