Kanoute demands action against Togo

Fredi Kanoute was attacked by angry Togo fans following Mali's African Cup of Nations qualifying victory.

SEVILLE - Sevilla striker Fredi Kanoute has called for FIFA to take action against Togo after the violence which marred Mali's 2-0 win in Lome at the weekend.

Kanoute and Stoke striker Mamady Sidibe were injured when angry Togo fans invaded the pitch after the match which saw Mali qualify for the 2008 African Cup of Nations at the hosts' expense.

Kanoute told the club's website www.sevillafc.es: "The people came onto the pitch. In the first few minutes we were a little nervous, although it was nothing serious.

"Then it got worse. We had to return to the changing room because the thing was getting serious but we did not know how to get back there as we were in the middle of the pitch.

"People were coming onto the pitch, we were hit."

Kanoute, who made his debut for Mali in 2004, added that he had never experienced anything like it in football.

"After the game I was more sad than anything," the former Tottenham man said.

"Even with the win I could not be happy, it was very, very serious.

"The Mali fans who were in the stands suffered even worse than we did.

"It is the job of FIFA to act. I am sure they are going to do something, we have to do something as this cannot be allowed to happen, there must be sanctions."
