Houston Dynamo president and general manager to host major charity event

HOUSTON, TX - Houston Dynamo President and General Manager, Oliver Luck, and his wife, Kathy Luck, will be celebrity hosts of "Houston's Fantastic Shoe Event", to be held this Friday, June 30, 2006, at 7:30 p.m., it was announced today.


The event will feature an auction of approximately 24 pairs of shoes worn by local and national athletes. The auction will benefit Women Helping Women, a not-for-profit 501c(3) Texas corporation dedicated to providing training and job placement in non-traditional occupations to displaced homemakers, battered women, women living in shelters and women welfare recipients.


The list of athlete-worn shoes is as follows: Houston Astros second baseman Craig Biggio, Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton-Kelley, former Madison High School and University of Texas quarterback Vince Young, Houston Rockets Center Yao Ming, Houston Comets forward and four-time WNBA Champion Sheryl Swoopes, Houston Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans wide receiver Jerome Mathis, and Houston Texans defensive end Antwan Peek.


The list also includes soccer shoes worn and signed by Houston Dynamo forward and US Men's National Team member Brian Ching, Houston Dynamo midfielder and captain Wade Barrett, Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad, Houston Dynamo defender Craig Waibel, Houston Dynamo forward Ronald Cerritos, Houston Dynamo midfielder Dwayne De Rosario, Houston Dynamo defender Kelly Gray, and Houston Dynamo midfielder Brian Mullan. The auction will also feature shoes worn and signed by Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan and New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman.


"This is a great event. I feel delighted to be able to lend a hand in the community through a great organization like Women Helping Women. At the end of the night, we expect to make a significant contribution, which will in turn help guarantee a better future for many Texas women", said Dynamo President and General Manager, Oliver Luck.


"This year alone, we have helped approximately 180 women," said Faye Turner, founder of Women Helping Women. "Right now, we're training 150 victims of Hurricane Katrina to use forklifts, so they can go back and rebuild their communities in Louisiana. Throughout our history, about 5,000 women have benefited from the training provided by Women Helping Women."


"Houston's Fantastic Shoe Event" will be held at The Resource Center, located at 7026 Old Katy Road, Suite 162, Houston, TX 77024. Tickets to the event are $50 per person.
