Hitzfeld frustrated by "careless" Bayern

Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld felt his side's 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday could have been far more comprehensive.

Luca Toni scored twice as Bayern bounced back from last weekend's shock defeat to Energie Cottbus and extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to seven points.

Dmitriy Bulykin pulled one back for the visitors late on, but their faint title hopes are now all but over.

Hitzfeld told Bayern's official website, www.fcbayern.de: "The team's performance was excellent. We always contained our opponents and played very well going forward.

"In the first half it was an open game as Leverkusen also played well and pressured us a few times in defence. But our defensive work was very good and we did not give them any clear chances.

"The second goal was a deciding moment. From then on it was only a question of the margin of victory. We had three, four chances to score the third goal. We were careless on a few occasions.

"After they made it 2-1 we had to sweat again for the last 10 minutes. That is football. When you pass up your chances you are often punished. We can not let that happen any more in future."

A Champions League place looks to be the best Leverkusen can now hope for after the defeat left them nine points behind their opponents.

And coach Michael Skibbe admitted he could have no complaints with the result at the Allianz Arena.

He said: "The score at the end of the 90 minutes flattered us. We deservedly lost the game 2-1.

"Especially after the went 2-0 up we had to watch out that we did not concede a third and fourth goal. We wanted to play up front, but allowed too many counter-attacks.

"I can not really be happy with our performance. We deserved to lose. A 2-2 draw would really have been an Easter gift."
