Hitzfeld drops Sagnol from UEFA Cup lineup

Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has dropped Willy Sagnol for Thursday's UEFA Cup semi-final second leg against Zenit St Petersburg after the full-back criticised his tactics.

The France international claimed on Sunday he was suffering from a confidence crisis because Hitzfeld keeps playing him out of position.

Hitzfeld, who recently dropped Martin Demichelis when he refused to play in midfield, has taken a hard line again by leaving Sagnol out of the squad travelling to Russia.

"Sagnol will be a spectator for a bit," Hitzfeld told club's television station.

"He will not travel to St. Petersburg but will instead train here twice."

The 31-year-old has already cast doubt over his future at the club this season, handing\ in a transfer request in December when he was not given an immediate return to the team after a long injury absence.

He retracted his demands when he began to play more regularly but a further injury which sidelined him for a month has cost him his place again.

Marcell Jansen and Philipp Lahm should be Bayern's full-backs against Zenit on Thursday.
