Henry 'can't wait' to pass Platini's mark

Thierry Henry is one goal away from passing Michel Platini as France's all-time leading goal scorer.

PARIS - Thierry Henry admits he cannot wait to eclipse Michel Platini in the record books.

Henry's goal in France's 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands on Saturday pulled him level on 41 goals with Platini whose record haul for Les Bleus came in 72 games.

Henry has taken 95 matches to accumulate his goals but is already looking forward to breaking the record - with his first chance coming on Wednesday against Lithuania at Nantes.

Henry told L'Equipe: "It will be amazing to overtake a player like Platini. For the time being, I am equal to him, so there is therefore another step to take, for me and for the team in general. We will try to do it against Lithuania."

Henry does not mind if the goal comes against Lithuania or against more fabled opponents.

He said: "Whatever context I do it in (break Platini's record), it will be a pleasure. You can always say, 'yes, it's the Faroes, it's easy'. But their last match showed it is not."

The Faroes had been unlucky to lose 2-1 to World Cup winners Italy in their previous home qualifier.

Barcelona forward Henry, 30, believes consistency is the key attribute for aspiring record-breakers.

He said: "What is important is being consistent. And it turns out that when you are consistent, you end up breaking records. You have to be there all the time."

Looking back on his career with France, Henry savoured his goal against South Africa in the 1998 World Cup - he would finish as top scorers for Les Bleus but did not play in the final.

He said: "The first left a particularly nice taste in the mouth, especially as I waited two days before knowing whether it would be given to me."

Originally that goal was registered as an own goal by South Africa's Pierre Issa before FIFA reconsidered and awarded it to Henry.

Asked about his best goal, he said: "At home v Scotland (5-0 in 2002), the one against Denmark (3-0 in 2000), and then the one against Brazil (in the 2006 World Cup) for prestige."

Henry's goal against Brazil in the 2006 quarter-final eliminated the defending world champions from the competition.
