Guevara voted Player of the Month

NEW YORK - New York Red Bulls midfielder Amado Guevara was named Major League Soccer's Player of the Month for October. Guevara played a key role in helping the Red Bulls clinch their fourth straight berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs by netting three goals on Oct.14. He also scored a goal against Colorado on Oct. 7, helping the Red Bulls to a 1-1 draw with the Rapids.


Guevara came up with three important goals to seal the Red Bulls' 3-2 victory over Kansas City on Oct. 14 and clinch their playoff berth. Also, on Oct. 7 Guevara scored the lone goal to hold the Colorado Rapids to a 1-1 tie. Guevara recorded all four goals scored by the club in the month of October.


Guevara has scored seven goals and five assists in his last 15 games, while also serving as team captain. He is currently tied for the all-time club record in career assists with 36. Guevara's eight goals during the 2006 regular season led the team and with five assists he was tied for the team lead.


Now in his fourth MLS season, the 2004 MLS MVP has proven to be one of the top players in the league. He was also named the 2004 MetroStars MVP and was a member of the 2005 MLS All-Star team.


This is Guevara's second career Player of the Month award, also winning in July 2004. He's been named Player of the Week four times in his career, most recently in the final week of the 2006 regular season. Guevara and the Red Bulls will face D.C. United in the first leg of the 2006 Eastern Conference Semifinal Series on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Giants Stadium at 2 p.m. ET.


The MLS Player of the Month is selected following the last game of each month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA). The PSRA votes among players nominated by their respective teams.
