Greek Wrap: AEK Athens fall to Panathinaikos

AEK Athens lost a five-point lead, the match, and their first place standing in the Greek Super League, to Panathinaikos.

ATHENS - Both sides had a man sent off as Panathinaikos beat AEK Athens 2-1 to go top of the Greek Super League.


Dimitrios Salpigidis got the ball rolling in the sixth minute, before Vangelis Mantzios doubled the advantage in the 34th minute.


Nikos Liberopoulos pulled one back in the three minutes before the interval, but the second half was dominated by the red cards handed to Anthony Seric and Traianos Dellas.


The result, Panathinaikossixth win in eight games, puts them one point ahead of second-placed AEK, who boasted a 100% record until last weekends 2-1 defeat at home to Iraklis.


Elsewhere, Ronald Garcia scored and got sent off as nine-man Aris Salonika beat Atromitos 2-1.


Garcia bagged the opener in the ninth minute, but saw red two minutes short of the hour.


In between, Luciano levelled the scores only to see Diogo Rodrigues Siston restore Aris` lead 19 minutes from time.


Calvo Toni was then dismissed in the 88th minute and Atromitos substitute Giannis Lazanas followed him off in stoppage time.


Panionios climbed to fifth after coming back from two goals down to beat FC Xanthi 3-2.


Tomasz Radzinski had fired Xanthi ahead with strikes either side of half time, but three goals in seven minutes from Marcello Pletsch, Rafik Djebbour and Fanourios Goundoulakis turned the game on its head.


Meanwhile, Iraklis drew 1-1 with Larissa, Levadiakos climbed off the bottom with a 2-1 win at OFI Crete, Veria lost 2-0 against Apollon Kalamarias and PAOK Salonika beat Ergotelis 1-0.
