Goldthwaite joins up with Red Bulls

ironic considering the fact that he has been compared to Dunivant his whole career. Both played for Bobby Clark in college and both are offensively-minded defenders.

"I consider it an honor to be compared to someone of the likes of Todd and maybe Bruce (Arena) saw some tendencies in me that maybe he likes more," Goldthwaite said.

Arena said that Goldthwaite's passing ability combined with his youth helped lead to the trade. Goldthwaite is only in his third season at the age of 24. He was drafted in the second round of 2005 MLS SuperDraft - 17th overall- by the San Jose Earthquakes. In his first full season he started eight games and played in 20 aiding the Houston Dynamo to the MLS Championship.

It was playing for Arena that enticed Goldthwaite to accept the trade to New York.

"The chance to play for Bruce is a large part of why I wanted to be here," Goldthwaite said. "I believe if you play well here, you get a good chance to further your career with the national team."

Goldthwaite arrives to New York just three days before the Red Bulls embark on a nine-day road trip that will see them make stops in Columbus, Houston and Colorado. It is a trip that is likely to see Goldthwaite be the 12th different player used in the backline this season and the 10th different starting lineup in the back five.

Goldthwaite will make his Red Bulls debut on Saturday when New York visits Columbus to battle the Crew at 8 p.m. ET (TV: MSG, HDNet).
