With a goal from ex-Sounder Brent Whitfield, Chivas USA defeat Seattle 1-0 in exhibition match

CARSON, Calif. - With a first-half header from midfielder Brent Whitfield, Chivas USA defeated the Seattle Sounders 1-0 tonight in an exhibition match played in front of a pro-Chivas crowd of nearly 6,000 at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington.


Whitfield, a native of Long Beach, California, headed home a cross from Chivas USA winger Francisco Mendoza in the 43rd minute to put the Red-and-White on top for good. Whitfield, together with Chivas USA teammate Preston Burpo, was a member of the Sounders' USL Division 1 championship squad in 2005 before joining Chivas USA during the offseason. Both players started and went the full 90 for Chivas USA in Sunday's match.


After a bye week, Chivas USA returns to league action this Saturday, May 13, when it takes on Taylor Twellman and the 2005 MLS Cup finalist New England Revolution at 4:00 p.m. PT (7:00 p.m. ET) at Gilette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Chivas USA will travel Thursday to New England and train Friday in Foxboro.
