Galaxy Rios win home opener, 6-0

In their home opener, the Galaxy Rios won their second consecutive game beating Poway Vaqueros 6-0 at The Home Depot Center on Saturday afternoon. David Estrada scored three times and Camillo Rojas added a goal and an assist while Brian Perk, Pat Barton and Max Young kept a clean sheet as the Rios improved to 2-0-0 on the young season.

David Estrada was able to get on the end of a missed clearance and open up the scoring for the Rios in the tenth minute.

Twelve minutes later Kyle Nakazawa scored his second goal of the season to double the Rios lead. The attack began with midfielder Michael Stephens racing up the right flank and then crossing to Amani Walker, who quickly played it back to Stephens. Stephens was able to get the ball in front of the box, where Nakazawa just had to tip it in past the Poway keeper, Keith Cline for a 2-0 Rios advantage.

It was 3-0 n the 32nd minute as Estrada was able to get the ball away from a Poway defender, and squeeze a shot off just past Cline for his second goal of the night.

Poway's best chance to get on the scoreboard was in the 37th minute when forward Alex Henry had a breakaway, only for Rios defender Jeremy Hohn to race back to clear the ball away from danger, leaving the score at 3-0 at the half.

Six minutes into the second half, Camillo Rojas got his name on the scoresheet as the Rios increased their lead to 4-0. With a scramble in the box, the Rios were able to get three shots off, all saved by Cline, but the final rebound fell to Rojas' feet, allowing him to calmly finish and extend the home side's advantage.

A pass from Rojas to Amani Walker resulted in the Rios fifth goal. Rojas was able to cross the ball to Walker, who cut past his defender and then dribbled around Cline before sliding into the open net for a 5-0 Rios lead.

Estrada rounded out the scoring and completed his hat trick in the 87th minute as he dribbled the ball right up the middle of the park, going past three defenders before shooting the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give the game its final 6-0 scoreline.

Rios goalkeeper Brian Perk, who recently spent a week in England with the U.S. U-20s, was able to hold on to the shut out in the first half before Pat Barton took over in goal in the second half. Barton, with the help of Max Young who came into the game in 77th minute, was able to give the Rios their second shut out.

The Rios are back in action on Sunday, June 8 at 4 p.m. when they take on the Lancaster Rattlers at the Lancaster National Soccer Center.
