Galaxy playing for pride vs. Hoops

For the first time in their 11-year history, the Los Angeles Galaxy will be mere spectators during the MLS Cup Playoffs. Last weekend's loss to FC Dallas assured the Green-and-Gold will not participate in this year's postseason.

For a group of veterans who have known nothing other than playing into November and hoisting trophies, a new motivation must be found heading into the regular season's final weekend.

Dallas comes to The Home Depot Center in a rematch of last weekend's contest. While revenge against the team that guaranteed their early vacation plans might be on the minds of some players, there is a much more basic motivator this weekend in Los Angeles.

Saturday's game is fan appreciation night, and the Galaxy players want to give their supporters something positive to remember them by during the winter months.

"Obviously (this weekend) is to have a good showing for our fans," said veteran defender Tyrone Marshall. "It's all about that right now. You want to go out on a winning note. You want to give them something to cheer about."

The Galaxy are expecting a loud and boisterous crowd, despite their sub-par performance this season. The atmosphere at The Home Depot Center should be electric, and Landon Donovan is looking forward to the weekend.

"Just have fun and enjoy it," said Donovan about the energy the crowd will bring on Saturday. "Give the fans and really ourselves something to go off on."

Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop conceded early this week in training that he hasn't decided exactly what kind of lineup he plans to use this week. It could be his full first team. It could be a mix of both first-team players and reserves.

Yet regardless of who takes the field for the Galaxy, there is still a bit more than just pride to play for. Widespread changes are expected in the Southland during the offseason, so for some, minutes this weekend need to be treated as an opportunity to keep one's spot on the roster.

"It's a little bit of playing for your job still," said Donovan. "You need to show that you want to be here. I think guys need to realize that."

That message is primarily directed towards the younger guys on the Galaxy squad. The veterans already know what it means to be a champion, and will be looking to display that side of the 2006 Galaxy to their fans on Saturday. A win should keep the fans in Los Angeles as hungry for next year as the players themselves.

"I just hope next year comes as quickly as possible," said Marshall, "so I can get back on the pitch and try to right the ship and show what the Galaxy is all about."
