Galaxy hope to make a difference

David Beckham looks forward to helping raise money for the California wildfire victims.

Sports are oftentimes seen as a welcome relief in times of trouble. But it's not everyday that a sports team has an opportunity to make a tangible difference in a time of hardship. That's exactly what the Los Angeles Galaxy will do on Sunday when they play in a charity match against Hollywood United at The Home Depot Center (5 p.m. PT).

Tickets will cost $20 and all proceeds will go to aid the victims of the California wildfires that have ravaged southern California. More than 2,000 homes have been destroyed and 640,000 people displaced by the fires.

David Beckham, who is new to southern California, has always been known for his charitable heart and is looking at Saturday's game as a very important opportunity for the Galaxy to take advantage of.

"It's a terrible time. If this is the way we can help as a team and as club then I think it's a great idea for us," said Beckham. "The most important thing is raising money for the people that need it and to help."

The around-the-clock news coverage of the devastation caused by the fires has been a wakeup call for the entire nation. For residents of southern California, the poor air quality and dark skies have served as a first-hand reminder of the losses suffered by their neighbors.

"You realize how bad it is when you see the images on TV. You wake up every morning and there's ash all over your car," said Beckham. "When it's a tough time like this you have to do what you can."

While the game will serve a serious purpose off the field, on the field the game should be a great deal of fun. Hollywood United features a celebrity lineup and will also include former Galaxy greats like Mauricio Cienfuegos and current Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas.

"It's going to be an interesting game. It's going to be a fun game. That's what it's there for," said Beckham.

In addition to 100 percent of ticket sales going to charity, there will also be a silent auction to raise money for disaster relief causes. Parking is free for the event, so fans should make a point to turn up and enjoy a very entertaining game.

The match on the field will be all fun and games, but the real purpose of the event won't be lost on the players involved. The Galaxy have an opportunity to make a real difference and they have invited their fans to join them in the cause.
