Former U.S. 'keeper Vanole dies

came to an end, Vanole turned to coaching. He served as the goalkeeper coach for the UCLA men's and women's teams in the late '90s, winning a national title with the men's team alongside current Columbus Crew head coach Sigi Schmid in 1997.


He served as an assistant to Schmid again in 1999 for the U.S. under-20 men's national team at the FIFA World Youth Championship, and he served as the goalkeeper coach on the U.S. women's silver medal-winning team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.


Vanole went on to be the goalkeeper coach of D.C. United in 2003 and the New England Revolution from 2004-06. He filled the same position with the Washington Freedom of the WUSA.


Vanole, a long-time resident of Manhattan Beach, Calif., was born on Feb. 6, 1963. Information on services is forthcoming.
