Fire go with hot hand vs. experience

Matt Pickens will start for Chicago in net against New England on Sunday.

that does factor in to an extent," he said.

"But by the same token, you can't discount current form, not only in the goal but in the team," Sarachan said. "If you strictly defer to experience, then I think it's not being quite fair in terms of assessing where your group is at the moment. I think it does factor in when you start to pencil in your lineup, who can handle big games and who has the experience in big games and then alongside that is who is in the best form at the moment and how does that form translate into your team performance.

"When you put it all in the pot, where Matt falls a little short in playoff experience, he's a little long now in current performance and recent performance, and that tips the scales a little bit in my way of thinking."

Ultimately, Sarachan feels he is in a good position by having to choose between two qualified goalkeepers. And while he knows Thornton is more accustomed to being the top choice, he said the veteran has taken the recent change in stride.

"Honestly, he's been the ultimate pro, as I would have expected from Zach," said Sarachan. "I'm sure he would prefer to be in the first 11, but he's also been around enough to understand the rhythm of goalkeepers and the philosophy that if you're winning and you're playing well, there's no need for a change. If the shoe were on the other foot he wouldn't expect it any differently and he's been tremendously supportive of Matt."

As long as the club keeps winning, expect that support to continue. And if things don't go according to plan, it's always nice to know for Fire fans there's a proven winner ready to step in.
