Feinduono, Guinea back into ANC contention

Pascale Feinduono

ACCRA - Pascal Feindouno scored two goals and was then sent off as Guinea brought themselves back into Group A contention at the African Nations Cup with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Morocco.

The midfielder opened the scoring early on with a curling free-kick, before playing Ismael Bangoura in for the second shortly before the hour mark.

A bizarre few minutes then saw Hicham Aboucherouane pull a goal back and Feindouno restored the two-goal cushion from the spot after which he was dismissed for kicking out at an opponent.

Abdeslam Ouaddou pulled another back late on for Morocco, but it was not enough.

Feindouno gave Guinea a perfect start by scoring with the first real opportunity, curling an excellent free-kick from the left past Khalid Fouhami after 10 minutes.

The Moroccans immediately upped the tempo and Tarik Sektioui almost made Bobo Balde pay for his error in the penalty area, before the defender recovered to thump the ball away.

Youssef Hadji had a good chance midway through the half when neat interplay with Abdelkrim Kissi allowed the Nancy midfielder to open up the opposition defence, but his 20-yard shot was excellently dealt with by Kemoko Camara.

Another Feindouno free-kick immediately after allowed Balde in, but his header flew over the bar, before a change of routine from the Guinea's helped fool their opponents with Fode Mansare firing his set-piece from the edge of the area inches over.

Immediately after the restart, Hadji almost caught out Camara with a breathtaking shot curled with the outside of his foot from the edge of the penalty area that needed to be tipped over by the goalkeeper.

He was again in the mix five minutes later, this time latching onto a Youssef Safri cross, but this time blasted over from the edge of the area.

Then came a manic 10 minutes of play with three goals and a sending off.

Bangoura was first to strike in the 59th minute after the striker latched onto a fantastic Feindouno threaded pass and finished low beyond Fouhami.

Guinea looked to have celebrated too much too soon as Morocco hit back straight from the kick-off when substitute Aboucherouane scored a thumping 25-yard strike from the left with virtually his first touch.

In the 63rd minute, Souleymane Youla was brought down in the penalty area by Michael Basser and Feindouno tucked away the ensuing penalty, before a moment of madness left Syli Nationale down to 10-men.

After losing the ball to Elamin Erbate, the St Etienne midfielder kicked out at his opponent leaving the referee no choice but to show him a straight red with 22 minutes still to play.

However, the Moroccans failed to make use of the numerical advantage and could only manage to pull a single goal back in the final minute of the game, Ouaddou latching onto a flicked header from Kissi to nod the ball home from close range.
