FC Dallas draw with CAP U-20s

Dominic Oduro scored to help FC Dallas pick up a draw in Brazil.

CURITIBA, Brazil - Goals from Abe Thompson and Dominic Oduro were not enough on Tuesday, as FC Dallas tied Club Atletico Paranaense's U-20 team 2-2 in a scrimmage at CAP training center in Curitiba, Brazil. CAP scored twice in the final 20 minutes to earn the draw. FCD will finish the Brazil leg of preseason on Wednesday when they face Atletico Paranaense's first team at Kyocera Arena in the first leg of the USA-Brazil Challenge (5:45 p.m. CT).

FCD head coach Steve Morrow used the same formation as in the previous three games, starting four defenders, two midfielders, and four attacking players. Michael Dello-Russo started at right back, with Andrew Daniels and Aaron Pitchkolan holding down the center and Blake Wagner on the left. Dax McCarty and Anthony Wallace fed balls forward to Ramon Nunez, with the final third being covered by Abe Thompson, Dominic Oduro and Bobby Rhine.

Dallas got on the board in the 30th minute. Dax McCarty won back a ball near midfield and sent a simple pass left to Anthony Wallace, who went back to the right with a pass to Nunez. Nunez quickly turned upfield and threaded a pass down the left for Thompson. Thompson entered the top of the box, and with a defender closing in and the 'keeper moving forward, curled a shot to the far side net for the 1-0 lead.

Thompson helped make the score 2-0 for Dallas in the 58th minute. Pablo Riccheti took a ball at midfield, springing open Thompson down the right side. Thompson moved forward and sent a cross just inside the area, where Dominic Oduro jumped to head the ball in for the second goal.

Oduro had a chance to make it 3-0, but his open-net shot sailed high as he was falling off balance.

CAP took advantage of a forward back line in the 66th minute when Gerônimo beat an offsides trap to send Fernando Mineiro alone at 'keeper Shaka Hislop. Mineiro calmly hit the ball to the 'keeper's left for the first CAP goal.

The home side began putting passes together, with Blake Wagner clearing one of the line and Hislop denying a point-blank shot to keep the lead. That didn't last long, as in the 69th minute, Gerônimo took a ball down the right side and his centering cross was met by Washington for the easy tap-in.

Dallas had the best of the remaining chances, with shots by rookies Scott Jones, Sandy Gbandi and Tommy Krizanovic all saved in diving fashion by CAP 'keeper Neto. Arturo Alvarez cracked a shot off the crossbar from 35 yards out in injury time for the last chance of game.

Following Wednesday's game, the team will depart for Dallas on Thursday night. Up next for FCD is the Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup game vs. Columbus on Sunday at Pizza Hut Park.
