Fans to vote for Seattle franchise name

Joe Roth

Fans will be given a unique and unprecedented opportunity to vote on the name for the new Seattle MLS team this week. The online vote will be hosted at www.mlsinseattle.com between Thurs., March 27, beginning at 12:01 a.m. PT, and Mon., March 31, ending at 11:59 p.m. PT.

The team was inundated with suggestions, receiving 2,382 potential names from fans. "We are committed to build one of the fan friendliest teams in the league" said majority owner Joe Roth, so MLS Seattle have drawn up a shortlist of three names:

  • Seattle Alliance, inspired by bonds and connections. An alliance is an association to further the common interested of its members. The aim of the team is to bring together fans, coaches and players to form a unified group.

  • Seattle FC, where FC is the common abbreviation for "Football Club" used around the world, and Seattle FC is the globally recognized seal ecompassing all within the world's game.

  • Seattle Republic, where a republic is an association in which power resides in the hands of the people, clearly emblamatic of how MLS Seattle want fans to be involved throughout the club.

  • They'll also offer a write-in vote allowing fans to express other names and opinions.

"The three proposed names each have their own unique story and in addition, we will ensure all of our fans voices are heard as we will include a fourth option, a 'write-in' vote for fans who are passionate about another name." said Tod Leiweke, president of Vulcan Sports and Entertainment.

One vote per unique e-mail address will be accepted, and the winning name will be announced in a news conference webcast on Mon., April 7 at 11 a.m. PT at mlsseattle.com.

MLS Seattle presently has over 13,000 season ticket deposit holders, and opens play at Qwest Field in March 2009.
