Fabiano rallies Brazil past Uruguay in WCQ

SAO PAULO - Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano's brace helped Brazil to record a 2-1 comeback victory over Uruguay on Wednesday to move into second place behind Argentina in the South American World Cup Qualifying table.

Washington Sebastian Abreu opened the scoring for Uruguay after just eight minutes before Brazil responded to the boos echoing around the Morumbi Stadium as Fabiano equalised just before the break.

After Julio Cesar made several crucial saves to deny the visitors, Fabiano was first to react inside the area to maintain Brazil's unbeaten record.

Brazil trail Argentina, who suffered a 2-1 defeat by Colombia on Tuesday, by just one point, while Uruguay remain on four points in seventh place.

Four minutes into the game Real Madrid's Robinho sailed past two defender but was brilliantly denied by Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini.

Brazil were shocked four minutes later as Maximiliano Pereira crossed for striker Abreu to head Uruguay into the lead.

The goal inspired Uruguay and the visitors had several chances to extend the lead to the disgust of the home crowd as Cristian Rodriguez saw his long range shot saved by Cesar and Abreu headed wide.

But despite Fabiano firing through Carini's legs to equalise, the home side continued to direct their anger at the team and Brazil coach Dunga.

Ajax forward Luis Suarez had a good chance to regain the lead for Uruguay, but Cesar again rescued his side before Fabiano completed the comeback with a close range finish after an initial shot was only half cleared.

Shortly after Cesar again came to his side's rescue with a superb save from Abreu as Brazil hung on to secure all three points.
